ROAMpay, a mobile credit card reading device and application similar to Square, is now available on Blackberry devices.
ROAM Data, the app’s creators, tout it as the first credit card reader for Blackberry devices, adding that to a list of supported platforms that includes Android and iOS, as well as Mac and PC desktops.
Its credit card reader is a universal, plastic piece of hardware that plugs into the audio jack of any supported device and converts each credit card’s data into an encrypted audio signal, which is then processed by the ROAMpay application on the device.
Although it hasn’t quite commanded the same buzz, ROAMpay’s line-up of supported platforms sets it apart from Square, which is currently available only for Android and iOS-based devices.
In particular, being available on the historically business-friendly Blackberry platform could give ROAMpay a tangible advantage over its competition, at least as long as RIM’s mobile OS commands the market share it does.
The app isn’t supported by all Blackberry devices, but they’ve got most of the newer models covered. A complete list can be found on their press release.
