The head of Venezuela’s Congress, Diosdado Cabello, said that main opposition leader Maria Machado is no longer a member of the legislature. This would strip Machado of parliamentary immunity and open up the possibility of a criminal prosecution against her.
Cabello, who is also President Nicolas Maduro’s right-hand man, claimed that Machado lost her seat when she accepted Panama’s invitation to address the Organization of American States last week, according to multiple news reports. Last week, Cabello and other members of Maduro’s party announced their desire for a criminal investigation into Machado, accusing her of treason for her role in the protests that have swept the country for almost two months.
