See All the Oscar Night Twitter Activity in 50 Seconds

We all know that the 86th annual Academy Award’s 2014 Oscar telecast was a big night for Twitter. Host Ellen DeGeneres put the micro-blogging service front and center when she and a gaggle of celebrities took the “selfie seen around the world,” but the exact impact of that act can be hard to quantify or see — until now.

Geospatial data company Cartobd has, along with Twitter, created the animated map you see above. It collapses all the geotagged tweets featuring the hashtag #Oscar2014 that were sent throughout the four-hour show into a 50-second animation. It’s kind of beautiful to watch. Among the things you’ll notice is the preponderance of tweets in the U.S., Western Europe and South America, and the lack of interaction in Africa, Canada and much of Asia.
