LOS ANGELES — Though Alfonso Cuarón’s space epic Gravity dominated the 86th Academy Awards with seven wins in the 24 categories, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave secured the ceremony’s biggest honor, Best Picture
12 Years a Slave beat out 288 other films that were eligible for Best Picture. The film came out in October 2013, building a groundswell of support by moviegoers and critics alike for its emotional tale of Solomon Northup’ struggle for survival in a pre-Civil War United States. The film also won Best Adapted Screening and Best Supporting Actress on Sunday night.
