NASA‘s Super Guppy airplane may look like a bloated steel whale, but it’s carrying very valuable cargo.
The wide-bodied aircraft landed at an airfield near Huntsville, Ala. on Wednesday with — in NASA’s own words — “an innovative composite rocket fuel tank.” The Super Guppy has a hinged nose that opens for easy unloading. Once the tank is removed, NASA will test it for future missions at its Marshall Space Flight Center
Super Guppy isn’t new — it’s just super cool.
This aircraft, which is operated by NASA and manufactured by Boeing, is used to carry exceptionally large cargo. It’s successor, which looked very similar and carried components of the Apollo moon program, was appropriately named Pregnant Guppy. Read more…
