In Pictures, Crimea’s New Russian Identity

Across Crimea, the streets and countryside are a study of contrasts and transition. Mothers with children in strollers share sidewalk space with Russian armored personnel carriers, while workers are changing signs on buildings to specify the the region’s new status as a part of Russia, not Ukraine.

Evgeny Feldman, staff photographer for the Russian publication Novaya Gazeta and a frequent contributor to Mashable, documented the referendum on Sunday that effectively ratified Russia’s annexation. He spent the subsequent days traveling around the region, capturing life in the new political and military environment.
