After weeks of calm, the Ukrainian capital city Kiev erupted in new violence outside the country’s parliament building on Tuesday, leaving 14 dead, according to the latest Reuters report
Protesters in Kiev have demonstrated on and off since last November when President Viktor Yanukovych rejected an agreement that would have led to closer economic ties with the European Union in favor of a $15 billion bailout package from Russia. They have since called for Yanukovych’s resignation.
This latest round of violence again pitted protesters against police. The two sides battled just before members of parliament were set to pass constitutional amendments that would lessen the power of the president, forcing those members to postpone the vote. Read more…
