New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter intends to retire after the 2014 season.
The 13-time All Star and five-time World Series champion made the announcement in a message posted to his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. After playing just 17 games in an injury-plagued 2013 — by far the lowest total since 1995, the year Jeter broke into the league — Jeter said he began to consider retirement. Friends and family urged him to not make any announcements until he was certain of his decision
