That’s all, folks!
The 2014 Sochi Olympics wrapped up Sunday with a closing ceremony full of sparkles, floating boats and just a little bit of self-deprecating humor.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the spectacle was a surprise ironic jab at the now infamous technical malfunction of the opening ceremony during which the fifth Olympic ring failed to open. Dancers formed the Olympic rings, but not before taking a moment to reference the glitch. The group in the top right momentarily remained in a small ball before broadening out to form the full ring.
The ceremony put a spotlight on Russian culture, turning the spotlight on the host country’s literature, art and music. It featured performances from a variety of cultural Russian institutions including the music of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, ballet and circus acts. Keeping with the Olympics’ long-running theme of youth, a children’s choir performed Russia’s national anthem. Read more…
