The government has said that it wants the UK to be a hotbed of research into driverless cars, and has announced a prize fund of up to £10 million for a town or city to join Milton Keynes in becoming a test center for the new unmanned automotive technology.
The National Infrastructure Plan, published yesterday, said that a legislative and regulatory review will take place in 2014 to ensure that there are adequate and appropriate provisions for driverless vehicles to operate on public roads or pathways.
According to the BBC, by mid-2017 there could be up to 100 driverless pods cruising along the paths of the UK, avoiding pedestrians by using special sensors.
