The United States Capitol was on lockdown Thursday afternoon after gunfire rang out near the building.

Multiple news outlets reported the lockdown, while eyewitnesses began documenting the incident on Twitter around 2:30 p.m. ET. Chris Moody, a political reporter for Yahoo, was at the scene of the shooting and tweeted his experience

Sounds of POP POP POP on House side of Capitol building. Police closing off street. Police have guns drawn. Unknown if shots.

I asked Capitol policeman if that was shots. He said “Yeah” and told me to go underground if I could.
