M&C Saatchi has been signed as Twitter’s first PR agency in the UK according to PR Week. The hope is that the two can work together to take the short messaging service to a wider domestic audience.
According to PR Week, M&C Saatchi will be working to change the assumption that Twitter is a resource for journalists or a promotional tool for celebrities and brands to sell their wares.
As we reported in May, Twitter in the UK has more than ten million users and 80% of them are mobile. 340 million tweets pass through the platform each day.
These are impressive figures, but in comparison with 30 million Facebook users in the UK, the service has room to grow.
User habits are also slow to change, in the UK, more users share news on Facebook and by email than those who add links or updates elsewhere.
Alongside the agreement with M&C Saatchi, Twitter has recently appointed Helen Prowse as its new UK comms director. Prowse starts work on July 23rd and is expected to boost the number of users as part of her role.
It will be interesting to see how M&C Saatchi engages UK mobile and Internet users. Although the social network is said to be leveraging a more social Olympic Games, for interpersonal use, the humble text message is still a go-to service for many mobile users.
