The Muppets

Walt Disney Studios announced it will developing a sequel to its wildly successful film The Muppets, during the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Thanks to a strong digital campaign that not only revived its brand but also led to huge box office sales, you will be seeing more Muppets in the near future.

Director James Bobin will return to direct the sequel along with co-writer Nicholas Stroller, though lead actor Jason Segal — who also co-wrote The Muppets — is not expected to return.

The film — which raked in more than $158 million, according to Box Office Mojo — was the first to feature Jim Henson’s Muppets in 12 years. In anticipation of the film, The Muppet Studios launched a massive proactive social and viral campaign, which began with a comedic cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

It continued with iPhone apps, a huge push on Facebook with many of the Muppets having their own presence, and even a Twitter account managed by characters Statler and Waldorf, known for their off-stage heckling.

The Muppets was nominated and won a series of awards, including an Academy Award in the Best Original Song category for its song “Man or Muppet.”
