How Affiliate Marketing Works

In its simplest form, upon signing up as an affiliate, you get your own unique link, which you can publish online, or send out in emails.

Whenever someone follows that link, they’ll go to the vendor’s website, and the link identifies that visitor as having been sent by you.

Then, if they go on to buy, the affiliate management system will note that you provided the lead, and you’ll be compensated. It’s as easy as that!

(Some systems are more complicated, such as CPA (cost per action) marketing, where people have to complete a certain action, usually filling in a form.)

How Much Can You Earn?

It totally depends on what you’re selling, what the profit margin is, and how much the vendor can earn over time.

Sometimes, you can get 100% (or more than 100%) of the original amount the customer pays – because of future additional revenue!

For one-off sales of digital products, the typical affiliate percentage is 50%. That’s because there’s usually very low cost of sale, which means high profit.

If you get serious, there are many good affiliate networks, which will show you a range of products to sell. Commission Junction and ClickBank are good places to start.
