Here’s another contest, but this one has a larger prize and greater purpose: The Heritage Provider Network is offering $3 million for an algorithm that will predict hospitalizations by using a pre-defined set of patient data sources. The Heritage Health Prize site claims that over $30 billion was spent on unnecessary hospital admissions in 2006. If patients that are at risk for hospitalization can be identified in advance, health care providers could develop new care plans to prevent hospitalization. The contest will be open for registration early next year.

According to The Heritage Health Prize site, the algorithms will have access to the following data:
- Outpatient encounter data
- Hospitalization encounter data
- Medication dispensing claims data, including medications
- Outpatient laboratory data, including test outcome values
According to the Prize’s FAQ, the eligibility requirements are as follows:
To be eligible to compete and claim any prize, a Team must be organized in a jurisdiction in which the Competition is not prohibited by law. A Team must have insurance, self-insurance, or other risk management means as required by applicable law and determined by HPN, in its sole discretion, to be adequate to protect against potential claims, losses, and damages arising from Team’s participation in the Competition.
Teams from all countries and with any background are eligible to compete in the Competition, including, but not limited to, small companies, not-for-profit foundations, and Teams comprised of students and/or faculty from universities, colleges, or other academic institutions.
HPN employees and their families may neither participate in nor have a financial interest in any Team.
