We’ve covered SimplyBox, the enterprise social software that can either embed itself into or overlay itself on top of any other application, in the past. Now the company is preparing to release “Fragmentation,” a feature that will reverse the process by letting SimplyBox users take “fragments” of other applications and embed or overlay them wherever they want.
The company demonstrated the application by showing how an element from Oracle‘s CRM on Demand can be “fragmented” and placed into any other application via SimplyBox. However, this is not yet officially supported by Oracle. Vendors will need to enable fragmentation in their applications before SimplyBox will work. CEO Mario Cavagnari hopes to licence the SimplyBox Fragmentation technology to vendors. To be clear, the destination application ( need not support (in this example, Microsoft Outlook and Business Objects) need not support SimplyBox.
The fragments are live and interactive. Users will get the same updates through the fragment they would get in the original application, and can make updates. Users will also be able to access the fragments through SimplyBox’s iPhone app.
We’ve previously explored the concept of “web oriented architecture” in our white paper with Socialtext. Socialtext offers Socialtext Connect, which allows users to turn events in enterprise software into activity streams to be read in Socialtext. We love activity streams, but they’re not always the best way to present information.
We also like to idea of every application offering an API that allows users to pull information out of it, but not every application can or will offer that. SimplyBox provides a new way to pipe information around without having to reformat it, without having to write new applications for dealing with the data. SimplyBox Fragments can be created and used anywhere without IT involvement.
