I have three Twitter apps on my iPhone that I use for different things – TweetDeck for its continuously awesome list support, Twitter for its push notifications, and Echofon for its ability to search through my friends and followers. None, however, are all that great for viewing links and that’s where the latest addition – UberTwitter – attempts to stand out.
UberTwitter, the mobile Twitter client popular with BlackBerry users, distinguishes itself with a feature it calls "UberView".
UberTwitter has all of the standard features you’d expect with a Twitter client – it handles lists, mentions and all of the standards. It doesn’t appear to offer notifications, but again, that’s what Boxcar, Twitter or Echofon is for. What it does have, however, is a link preview feature.
Holding your phone upright and tapping on a Tweet gives a full-screen, text-only preview of the link in that Tweet. Double-tapping on that preview will open the full page within the app. If you hold the phone sideways, you can see a preview pane that shows a quick preview of the link in each Tweet.
As Endgadget points out, it "looks a pretty slick idea, but there are still some early issues to be ironed out — as with all beta iterations". Users in the app’s review section complained of ads, though we didn’t find them all that intrusive. We found the app a bit unintuitive, but it could be worth it. If BlackBerry users like UberTwitter enough to create more than 10 million Tweets per day, however, why not give it a shot?
