From the moment the first reporters showed up in Newtown, Conn., to cover the tragic shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, the relationship between families of the victims and the press has been tenuous at best. As one small business owner in the town said about the media at the time, “Please tell them to just ease up. It happened and we’re going through it. Just let it be for right now.”

Now, nearly a year later, the balance between reporting and the town’s desire to “let it be” is about to be tested again. Local police in Newtown will release the 911 tapes from the shooting to several media outlets Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. The town initially fought the request, but a Connecticut judge ruled late last month that the calls are part of the public record and should be released under the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
