Will Google Helpouts Undercut Freelancers?

In the future world of Google Helpouts, which the search giant officially unveiled yesterday, a teacher on a tablet will improve our yoga poses. We will learn to strum from a remote guitar guru. Photoshop experts will share our screens as we touch up our pictures. Makeup artists will help us apply mascara and tell us we have beautiful eyes. And we will all make the perfect birthday cake

At least, that’s the kind of long-distance assistance envisioned in Google’s utopian video. But is that really the main thing Helpouts will be used for? Dig deeper into the Hangouts site, which is currently limited to 1,000 service providers, and you find a lot more prosaic kinds of work on offer: Search Engine Optimization ($25 per helpout).
