BBC drops Adobe Air, Windows Media format for new iPlayer Downloads client

The BBC has launched a new version of its iPlayer Desktop software in the UK to combat issues that plagued its previous version that resulted in a hit-and-miss experience for viewers.

Now, however, the new iPlayer Downloads client (along with a slight name change) is no longer based on Adobe Air, thereby circumventing what the BBC described as “issues resulting from updates to” the said software.

As part of the process, it has streamlined some of the options and had to drop support for delivering downloads in the Windows Media format as it was “no longer cost-efficient”. Unfortunately, other features like Series Record have had also had to be dropped too, along with Live TV and Live Radio – which provided a duplication of the iPlayer website. Still, at least it should work as you’d expect now.
